Let Fury Have the Hour

We here at the John Sayles Blog want to draw your attention to an amazing project by filmmaker Antonino D’Ambrosio.

It’s a documentary called Let Fury Have the Hour, and it made a huge splash at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, and has landed critical praise and top-10 lists all over the country.

From the film’s website:

“Acclaimed filmmaker Antonino D’Ambrosio’s dynamic social history chronicles a generation of artists & thinkers creative-response to the reactionary politics that now defines our culture. An exuberant mixed media collage incorporating art, music, animation, and performance, the film brings together 50 writers, playwrights, painters, poets, skateboarders, dancers, musicians, and rights advocates, each revealing that we can re-imagine the world we live in and take an active role in making that vision a reality.”

The reason this film is so special to us, aside from its being so thoughtful and well-made, is because John Sayles is one of the artist/activists interviewed, and clips from both “Brother from Another Planet” and “Matewan” are featured.

Let Fury Have the Hour is an inspiring look at how  “We are all born citizens of the world,” and artists who work for change by being  for something, instead of against something.  While it’s not available On Demand yet, we urge you to keep a lookout for future developments and screenings near you.  You can visit the movie’s website at www.letfuryhavethehour.com and watch the trailer below.

Apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I’m desperate to find how to get rights for one-time showing of Matewan. I know of no other movie that comprehensively touches on so many issues while providing engaging “entertainment.” I don’t understand how this award-winning film cannot be shown publicly – makes me suspicious that some culprit bought the rights!
I do take some consolation in the rest of the blog. Lots of interesting stuff.
Thanks much – I’m glad to have found the site!

    • Jeanne,

You are correct about a crook having bought the rights to “Matewan.” We are hoping that soon, after a long legal battle, they will be in the the right hands and we can do all kinds of amazing things like re-issue a high-quality DVD. In the meantime, you can direct inquiries of this type to John’s assistant at [email protected].

Thanks for stopping by the blog!

Thanks for the update. I look forward to such a re-release! I just finished Thinking in Pictures -before which I thought I have a good story for a screenplay, but the “thought” is not just an idea, it’s work! Then I found Lon Savage’s – doing more research. After a couple of searches and phone calls, I was able to get the rights to show Matewan in our local independent theater – it was more expensive than the owner expected, but I’m thrilled and honored to expose more people to the film. We may lose money showing it (I hope not), but it tells the story we need to hear (and see). Next I’ll get more current with Let Fury Have the Hour . Best to you all!
