A message from John & Maggie

What a great time we had on the YELLOW EARTH book tour. We loved seeing all of our old friends. Lots of hugging and kissing and shaking of hands. That was then! We were very lucky to return home – last stop Seattle – and to be symptom free. We are self isolating these days, with plenty to entertain us. Take care of yourself and look around to see who might need some help. Now go wash your hands -Maggie and Joh View this post on Instagram Sign up to the TomorrowToday weekly updates to receive our insights and resources for...

We met so many MATEWAN fans during the Yellow Earth book tour. Remember that when we made the movie, no one wanted to talk about the Matewan Massacre…

Now you can visit the beautiful West Virginia Mine Wars Museum in Matewan itself. The Museum is re-opening in a union-owned building in Matewan, WV on May 16, 2020 – the town’s official date of observance of the shoot-out that occurred there 100 years ago. It’s a small but mighty museum in Matewan that tells the story of coal miners and their struggle for unionization and justice. It’s exciting to see the exhibits, their mission, and their space grow over these past five years. Because it’s a small...

What a whirlwind of a great time we had on both legs of our YELLOW EARTH book tour, and at the American Cinematheque Sayles film series in L.A. Thank you to all who came out to partake in the readings and discussions of YELLOW EARTH. 17 cities of engaged citizens and great conversations! Film fans – we hope you enjoyed the retrospective and got to see a few features. We had a very ambitious schedule and couldn’t be at all of the screenings, but it was great to revisit some of those old favorites with you! Many thanks to the...

Our friend Mary Cybulski snapped this one at the Guilford Library where the YELLOW EARTH tour began last night. John packed the community room and sold out of all the books supplied by the new owners of Breakwater Books. Note the hand in the foreground is holding a vintage copy of UNION DUES. It’s going to be a busy February indeed, and we hope you can join us at a reading! – Maggie Photo by Mary...

SONORA continues making its mark globally since its U.S. debut last Fall

A powerful collaboration between John Sayles (writer) and Alejandro Springall (producer/director), SONORA is available in the US only on Pantaya.com, but it is playing all around the world on Neflix. Alejandro has heard from viewers from Egypt and India who really connect with the movie. UNESCO Latin America has championed the film with invitations to their conferences in Panama and Mexico City. And Alejandro was invited by Sub-Commandante Marcos (now Sub-Commandante Galleano) to show the film for Zapatistas and others in Chiapas, Mexico....

“Movies ‘Til Dawn”: Interview with John Sayles

Posted by on Jan 6, 2020 in Movie Making | 0 comments

John recently sat down with “Movies ‘Til Dawn” blogger and podcast host, Ray DeFelitta, for a riveting discussion about John’s indie-film career. The conversation is filled with great anecdotes and plenty of insight about John not only as director, but writer and editor also. Among the films they delve into are RETURN OF THE SECAUCUS 7, HONEYDRIPPER, AMIGO, and MATEWAN. John also describes working with the iconic cinematographer Haskell Wexler, adapting to digital editing, and what is expected of and appreciated about...

New Year, New Book!

Posted by on Jan 3, 2020 in Movie Making | 1 comment

Happy New Year from John & Maggie and the Anarchists’ Convention team! The new decade is off to a great start for us with the release of John Sayles’ 5th novel, “Yellow Earth”. Set in the early 2000’s, the story delves into the havoc that ensues after shale oil is discovered under the fictional North Dakota town of Yellow Earth, and its neighbor, Three Nations Indian reservation. And a new book means we’re going on the road! We’re very excited to be kicking-off the “Yellow Earth” book tour at the end of this month...
